EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps people process and recover from distressing or traumatic experiences. It is recognised by organisations such as the NHS, NICE, and the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress.
Sometimes, difficult experiences can become “stuck” in the brain. When this happens, memories may feel intrusive or emotionally intense long after the event has passed. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories, allowing them to be stored in a way that feels less distressing and more manageable.
During an EMDR session, you are guided to briefly focus on a difficult memory while engaging in gentle, side-to-side stimulation. This might involve eye movements, tapping, or listening to alternating sounds. Over time, this process can reduce the emotional impact of the memory and help you develop a more balanced perspective.
You are always in control of what you share. There is no need to go into detail about your experiences unless you feel comfortable doing so. Sessions are carefully paced, with a strong focus on safety, stability, and support.
EMDR can be helpful for a range of difficulties, including trauma and PTSD, anxiety and panic, distressing life events, phobias, and low self-esteem linked to past experiences. Therapy is always tailored to your individual needs and takes place within a safe, collaborative relationship.
